When purchasing a vehicle whether new or used, there are quite a few details to consider. But when it’s your first car, there are a lot of things
that are insignificant than if you were purchasing your fith or seventh car. When buying your first vehicle you should opt for safety and affordability. However this is quite the opposite as most persons opt for comfort and convenience.

Maybe you’ve decided to trade in that “old beater” your parents gave you right before you started college or maybe it’s just time to save that cab fare and get your own wheels. Purchasing your first car can be a tedious and prolonged process due to indecisiveness so it’s best to concoct a plan before you head out to the car dealers.

In crafting a plan you should first ask yourself several important questions:

1. How much money can you afford to spend ? This includes the total price of the car, which incorporates the actual cost of the vehicle, the relevant legal costs such as “titling and registering” and insurance coverage.

2. Will you be able to maintain this car? It is rather unrealistic for you to spend your entire savings on a new vehicle.

3. What kind of car is cohesive to your lifestyle? Factors such as how far you’ll be driving the car or the common terrain would come into play. A vehicle that gets good gas mileage especially if your everyday travel to work or school is a fairly long distance or maybe an SUV would be suitable due to the types of road (dirt tracks etc.)

4. Should you purchase a new or used car? ALmost if not all persons would opt for a brand new first car. Unfortunately this cannot be the case for everyone and as such our budget and other priorities comes into play. It’s important to assess your personal situation before making this decision.

5. Will you have to opt for financing? It is earnest that you get quotes from both banks and credit unions.  Naturally you would select the institution with the lowest interest rate. It will save you lots of cash.

Before even thinking of a particular model and year car you must answer the above questions in an assured manner. Thenceforward you may think of the exact models you like. Which one fits in your budget? You must weigh the pro’s and cons. Hence some detailed research is required. It is important to consider safety ratings, options and warranties.
